I can’t say I love one season more than others but I do enjoy Fall! The crisp cool air, cozy sweaters, my birthday, warm beverages and my absolute favorite… beautiful changing leaves. Honestly, just all of the amazing fall family activities make it wonderful.
Whether you like fall or not there is plenty to do to make the most of this fall.
I’m not a homebody and love a good adventure out and about. So, naturally I love fall activities that get us out of the house.
However, if you prefer to stay at home the rest assured there are still plenty of ways to enjoy this fall!

Decorate for Fall
An obvious but not so obvious family activity is decorating for fall. This is a great time to get the kids involved in helping decorate and growing in a love for the season. The kids and I are making some DIY fall decor that is going to be so precious. Dollar Tree is a great place to find little fall decor knickknacks for your DIY projects.
Get Dressed Up for Halloween
I’m not a huge fan of Halloween and the scary stuff it brings. But, I don’t mind getting dressed up and going trick-or-treating. We went to our local college campus last year and let the kids go around participating in their Halloween festivities for kids. It was lots of fun dressing up with the kids and having a themed family costume. Check out these awesome Halloween costumes at Fun.com!
We love doing crafts in our house and themed crafts are the best (post coming soon)! We will be doing lots of fall themed crafts over the next several weeks. A lot of our toddler fall craft supplies come from The Dollar Tree (you would be amazed at the fun craft supplies you can find for cheap!).
I love going and picking out pumpkins of all shapes and sizes for fall decor. Not to mention all the pumpkins needed for pies and delicious pumpkin seeds. This activity is great for any age and will make a fun family tradition.
By now you have probably planned to go to a pumpkin patch so naturally you will need to do something with all of those pumpkins. Pumpkin carving is a great way to use your pumpkins and have some cute fall decor. Make it extra exciting and turn it into a family pumpkin carving competition! All you need is a pumpkin, carving kit and some candles.
We live relatively close to apple orchards and plan to go apple picking this year. Enjoy fresh apple cider, apple pie and candied apples from your harvest. Lots of apple orchards include fun activities besides simply picking apples.
Start a Gratitude Jar
This year we have started a gratitude jar as a family to promote thankfulness. It is going to be our fall activity for the months of September and October and we will share it in November. Check out how to start a gratitude jar here and get your FREE download jar template and thankful card.
We recently took the kids to a zoo and they loved it. The only downside? It was sweltering hot. We have decided this is the perfect fall activity since the weather is crisp and cool.
We live in the North Carolina mountains so hiking is just a natural activity. You don’t have to live in the mountains though to go on a hike/nature walk (although I highly recommend a trip to the mountains). Hiking is perfect in the fall because it is cool enough to be enjoyable and the changing leaves make such a beautiful scene.
Bonfires are our go to fall activity. We built a fire pit in our backyard bjust so we can enjoy the fall evenings snuggled up by the fire. There is something about being gathered around a fire with people you love. I’ve had some of the deepest and meaningful conversations around the fire.
Explore a new downtown
We live close to several quaint mountain towns and love exploring the downtown areas. Stop at the local coffee shop and get a warm beverage and enjoy window shopping (or actual shopping) through the local stores. Support those small businesses. Honestly, this is when I get most of my Christmas shopping in
Make apple cider
Remember all those apples you picked at the orchard? Well, put them to use and make some cider. You can drink apple cider hot or cold.
Explore a Corn maze
Corn mazes are an absolute staple in fall family activities. Going to a corn maze is a must for a fall family bucket list and it is a relatively cheap activity too. Don’t worry either about getting lost…it’s corn you can walk through the walls. We let Blake “lead” us through a corn maze last year and it was so much fun!
Living in the mountains of North Carolina; leaf looking is a very common fall activity. People travel from all over the world to come and look at the gorgeous views as the leaves change colors. If you don’t live in the mountains but are able I would highly suggest visiting the Blue Ridge Parkway to view the leaves.
Pumpkin painting is a lot like pumpkin carving except that it doesn’t involve any carving with sharp objects. I love painting pumpkins with the kids because it is toddler friendly (no sharp objects for them). I have tested out acrylic and spray paint…acrylic worked best. Be warned if you are placing the pumpkins outside then spray a clear coat over them or the elements of mother nature will ruin your creation.
The fall weather provides the perfect time for camping. Go and plan a fun family camping trip…even if it’s just in your backyard. We love camping and the memories it brings. Fall is a great time to go because it isn’t too hot and makes sitting around a campfire all the more enjoyable.
Fall play dough kit
I love letting the kids play with play dough and I love it even more when it can be themed and educational! Little Learning Club has the cutest ideas for a fall themed play dough kit. It’s the perfect fall sensory activity for you little one!
