You will find some classic Christmas movies, some Netflix Christmas movies, Disney Christmas movies, Christmas movies perfect for the whole family, movies geared toward younger kids but best of all you will leave with more than one idea for the perfect family Christmas movie night!

Fun Family Christmas Movies Tradition to Start

One of the things we started doing as a Christmas family tradition was taking all of our family friendly Christmas movies and wrapping them in wrapping paper (we own lots of DVDs and Blu-rays). Then we place the movies in a little basket or bucket and each family member gets to pick a movie to unwrap throughout the Christmas season. Depending on how many movie options you have will depend on how frequently you do this.

We have quite the Christmas movie collection so we start in November and go Through December picking out movies randomly throughout the week. It makes for a fun family tradition and helps cycle through the Christmas movies without leaving any out.

If you don’t own a bunch of DVDs and are streaming your movies then fret not! You can still do this Christmas tradition! Simply write down the list of movies you want to watch for your Christmas season. Place each slip of paper in a jar and draw one out as your selection for the evening.

Christmas Movies for the Entire Family

There are some family Christmas movies that are geared more toward kids and then some that are definitely for an older audience. But then you have those movies that are just perfect to watch as a family regardless of age. Here are our top Christmas movies perfect for any family member.

1). Grinch

There have been many variations of this classic Dr. Seuss story but our favorite has been the 2018 animated version. It is a lot cleaner for the kids than the Jim Carrey version and offers a cute comic story. This was Blake’s most requested Christmas movie last season.

2). Noelle

This is a cute family comedy about Kris Kringle’s daughter and her adventure to save Christmas. It was a surprisingly fun and light hearted Disney Christmas movie. You can find this feature on Disney+ (check out our Disney+ favorites here).

3). Home Alone

It was hard to decide if this is a classic or simply perfect for the whole family (I think it’s both). Home Alone is the perfect Christmas Comedy for the whole family to watch. It has twists, turns, important life lessons and so much more to entertain the entire family. This is a must add for family Christmas movie night!

4). The Santa Clause

Tim Allen does an amazing job of playing Santa Claus in this comedy fit for the whole family. This movie has become an iconic Christmas movie that shows what it takes to become Santa Claus. The sequels aren’t terrible either but the original is a must for the Christmas season.

5). The Polar Express

Christmas movie night isn’t a thing without watch Polar Express at least once! Make so hot chocolate, get in your pjs and curl up together to watch this Christmas classic for the whole family! You can even get your kids the book and make a whole themed day out of it!!

Christmas Movies Perfect for Young Kids

There are so many options for family Christmas movies that sometimes its hard to know which ones are perfect to watch. Since we have young kids we often end up watching a lot of Christmas movies geared toward the younger audience. Surprisingly, I still love them and honestly find them just as entertaining as the more adult movies. Check out these top Christmas movies for younger kids!

6). The Star

This movie is absolutely a must for Christmas! We purchased this movie as a gift for the kids to open and enjoy on Christmas Eve. As a Christian mom I wasn’t expecting much biblical accuracy with this movie but let me tell you…I was wrong! It was unexpectedly on point with the Biblical aspect. It is the Nativity story from the point-of-view of the animals (so obviously that isn’t accurate) but it is the cutest movie for telling the real reason we celebrate Christmas.

7). Elliot: The Littlest Reindeer

Talk about a cute story…this is it! We stumbled upon this movie on Netflix (I currently can’t find it on Netflix anymore) and the kids instantly fell in love with it! Follow along as Elliot competes to become part of Santa’s reindeer team. Full of twists and turns and lots of cute lessons to teach your child this Christmas!

8). The Muppets Christmas Carol

I’m not a huge Muppets fan but my husband is…so, the kids get to watch this. I actually do like this Muppets version of the classic Christmas Carol story. It is one of the few Muppets movies I will watch and enjoy.

9). Annabelle’s Wish

I don’t know if you watched this when you were younger. But, I remember this adorable story about a cow and her Christmas wish. It is such a cute story and features Randy Travis. If you haven’t seen this movie then definitely add it to your list this Christmas.

Christmas Movies for Teens & Parents

As your kids get older they may still watch the classic animated family friendly Christmas movies to appease your sense of tradition but why not throw some new movies into the mix. These movies may be appropriate for some younger audiences (I’ll let you be the judge of that for your kids) but these are movies that Hunter and I enjoy when the kids are in bed. They are geared more toward an older PG 13 kind of audience rather than small kids.

10). Elf

This Will Ferrell Christmas movie has quickly become a family Christmas movie classic. It tells the hilarious story of a human who thinks he is an elf and his adventure to discovering more about himself.

11). How the Grinch Stole Christmas

This is the Jim Carrey version of the classic Dr. Seuss story. If you enjoy the story of the Grinch but don’t want an animated version then this is perfect for you. Be warned…there is some crude humor in this one but it is a comedic twist on a wonderful classic.

12). Christmas Shoes

I’ll be honest with you and let you know this movie will make you cry! It is based off of the popular song Christmas Shoes and is a heartwarming story of a young boy’s search for the perfect gift for his mom. It was a yearly addition to my family’s Christmas movie list growing up. Younger kids may enjoy this movie but I added to the teen & parent list due to the sadness and real world issues it deals with.

13). Jack Frost

This movie was another family tradition to watch growing up. It has some sad aspects to it but overall I would classify it as a comedy. It tells the story of a boy and his father bonding in an unlikely way. This one, like Christmas Shoes, is perfect for most ages but was added to this category for some of the humor and issues it deals with.

14). National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation

Talk about a hilarious family Christmas movie comedy…this is it! From start to finish this Christmas comedy will have you rolling in the floor with laughter. Just do yourself and everyone a favor…add it to your family Christmas movie list.

15). Christmas with the Kranks

This is another Christmas comedy to add to your family Christmas movie list. When their Christmas plans go wrong the Kranks must make the most of their holiday. It will have you laughing for sure!

What a fun way to learn about and celebrate Santa. This classic is perfect for kids to get in the Christmas spirit and prep for Santa (if you choose to celebrate Santa).

This is not my favorite Christmas movie (honestly I could do without it) but I know it is beloved by many. This sweet tale follows a little girl and her interaction with Santa. It is definitely a family Christmas movie classic!
