Once I received the first order, I was hooked!

I decided to go with Ipsy for my first subscription because it is the Ad I kept seeing the most.
After trying out Ipsy and loving it I figured I needed to try out a few other makeup subscriptions to see which ones were the best bang for your buck.
So, here I am to let you know my thoughts and experiences after testing out 3 different makeup subscriptions.
What is a Makeup Subscription Box?
If you are like me then chances are you are not a makeup guru by any stretch of the imagination. I am simply a Mom who enjoys starting my day feeling pretty (I know I’m beautiful regardless of makeup). Any way, there is a chance that, like me, you aren’t entirely sure what a makeup subscription box is.
Basically, it is exactly what it sounds like…a monthly subscription to a box of makeup. There are varying levels within every subscription but the basic is usually 5 sample size items.
You order these boxes (or bags) and receive brand name makeup to try and test out. The goal of these companies is that you will absolutely love their product and be converted into a lifetime customer.
It’s pretty genius if you ask me and a win-win.
Typically, you create an account and then take a quick beauty profile survey so they can curate the box to your preferences. You also select how frequently you wish to receive certain products.
Now that you have a better understanding of makeup subscription boxes let me share my reviews to help guide you to the best choice for your makeup subscription order!
Which Three Makeup Subscription Boxes?
I decided to try out Birchbox, Sephora and Ipsy. Each one has basically the same setup and number of products for comparable prices.
I chose these three companies after seeing frequent Ads and hearing from some friends about other options. The price point on all three was nice too!
Pros to Birchbox
The biggest pro to Birchbox is the reason I ordered through them; they run specials where you buy one get on free.
I purchased one box and had the second sent to me for free. Cancelling my subscription was fairly easy and I made sure to do it before the next month.
I received a good variety of hair care, facial care and makeup in both of my boxes and from a variety of brands.
Cons to Birchbox
Of the 3 boxes, Birchbox is the most expensive coming in at $15 a month. Had they not been offering the buy one, get one deal I probably wouldn’t have done this subscription as quickly.
While I did have a variety of products I felt these were less tailored to specifically me than the other subscriptions. I have very sensitive skin and do not usually select facial care items in my subscriptions for that reason.
3 out of the 5 items were facial care items which just made me feel like it wasn’t a box curated for just me.
Pros to Sephora Play! Box
The Play! Box is the cheapest of the three subscriptions at $10 a month. They offer a wide variety of products for facial care, hair care and makeup.
If you like the items you sample then it is fairly easy to shop for them at your local Sephora. They also offer 6 items instead of 5 like the other sample subscriptions.
Cons to Play! Box
Of the three subscriptions I tried this one was my least favorite due to the products. The samples felt smaller and I went through them much faster. I also found the brands to be lesser than that of the other subscription boxes. It was also annoying to have to completely cancel my subscription rather than being able to place it on hold.
Pros to Ipsy Glam Bag
Ipsy offers varying levels of subscriptions with the cheapest being the glam bag and the most expensive being the ultimate glam bag.
I purchased the glam bag ($12) and received 5 sample size products along with the makeup bag everything is sent in.
Ipsy is a great company to work with and anytime I have had to contact their customer support they are phenomenal and prompt.
Cons to Ipsy
There are really no cons in my opinion for Ipsy. If you are looking for a wide variety of products between facial care, hair care and makeup then that might be my only con.
I have received mostly makeup products from Ipsy but that could largely be due to how I filled out my beauty profile.
Which Makeup Subscription Box to Choose?
Since signing up for these subscriptions I have learned that the Play! Box is no longer offered by Sephora. Honestly, I’m not the least bit surprised that it was phased out because it really wasn’t impressive at all.
I chose to continue with Ipsy just because of how impressed I was by them. I am on my fourth bag with them and plan to continue using Ipsy.
Birchbox was amazing as well and I did enjoy all the products but I just feel Ipsy caters more to what I actually want than just sending me random samples.
Also, Ipsy is cheaper and I am big on finding cheap deals! (Unless of course you can get Birchbox 2 for 1 deal)
Ipsy has also made it easy for me to pause my subscription and skip months whenever I want.
